Each of the Flaugherty Twins Mysteries includes black and white drawings within the pages that help tell the stories. Book 3 of the series, Lost on Black Mountain, continues that tradition.
Jeff McKeever, the artist for the series, calls these little illustrations vignettes. They capture a particular moment in the story, focusing on the main action taking place at the time.
The first vignette in Lost on Black Mountain takes place at the train station in Portageville, the town closest to Black Mountain. Pat and Patty Flaugherty and their friends have come into town on the train, and when they arrive at the station, their friend Bill loses his wallet. On returning to the station to retrieve the wallet, Patty believes that it was actually stolen by a pickpocketing child and she determines to help Bill retrieve what was stolen. The artwork captures the moment when Patty and Bill accost the child and demand back the money he stole.
What surprise awaits them after they confront the child?
Patty had noticed several children at the station when the incident originally happened. How do these children connect with each other, and are they part of some larger criminal enterprise? And how does all this connect with the known juvenile offenders who are participating in the summer camp?
All these questions will soon be answered as the Flaugherty twins continue their investigation and finally unravel the mystery that is at the core of Lost on Black Mountain.
